Learn the ukulele in this week-long camp.  Each student will learn proper hand positioning, basic strumming patterns, and 4-5 chords which can be used to play many popular songs.  This introductory class is a great way to find out if the ukulele is the right instrument for you!  A limited number of Ukuleles are available for rent for an additional $15 through Holland Recreation.

During this camp participants will learn basic beats and rhythms. Each participant will receive a bucket drum and sticks at the end of the course. No equipment needed.

Learn to play different percussion instruments like the djembe, hand drums, shakers, sticks and others from around the world. Participants will learn techniques and rhythms for each instrument. This will be a high energy, hands-on class. All equipment is provided by the instructor.

Fall 2026

Students will learn hand-building techniques to make a functional piece and a decorative ceramic piece, following the work of prominent ceramic artists. Self-exploration will be encouraged. Work will be glazed or cold surface finished (with paints) and taken home at the end of the course.

Trick or treating is so much fun when you have a special bag to carry all your candy, so leave the pillowcases at home this year! Stop in for a quick drop-in class to learn how to make your very own trick-or-treat bag, with all supplies and machines included. No sewing experience is needed, so come ready to have fun and get into the ghoulish spirit!

Students will receive either wheel throwing and/or hand-building instruction for creating functional and/or decorative ceramic pieces following the work of prominent ceramic artists.  (For example: a mug to drink from, a bowl to hold special things in or to eat from, a mini sculpture, etc.) All work that can be saved, will be glazed & fired. *There are fewer wheels than registrants, therefore students interested in wheel time will be expected to share time on the wheel over the course of the 6 weeks.

Rachel Sligh

Rachel Sligh is a lifelong resident of the Holland Area and has been teaching art for Holland Public Schools for 24 years.  She is K-12 certified and has taught all age groups during her tenure at HPS.  She is a wife, mother, artist, and sailor.  When she’s not in the classroom, she’s typically on the water.  She’s excited to have the opportunity to branch out and work with the community through classes of art exploration!

Jennifer Gietzen

Jenn Gietzen is a music therapist, sound facilitator, and music teacher in West Michigan.  She has been working with kids and adults using music as a tool for growth and development for 20 years.  She loves playing and teaching guitar, piano, drums, ukulele, singing, and dancing.  She also loves using sound to create relaxing experiences for people who would like to incorporate more meditation and mindfulness into their lives.
